The object before treatment. The section of missing rim is clearly visible.
The area of loss in the rim left the top of vessel’s handle unsupported. The object’s surface was also very fragile and friable due to age. The most delicate areas of the surface were stabilized before other treatment could be carried out.
Extensive cleaning was not possible on this object because of its fragility, however, the break-edge along the rim required cleaning to make repairs.
A fill for the rim was modeled, molded and cast in a tinted epoxy. This was carried out without handling the object. The large rim fill was then attached to the object and a “bridge” between the handle and new rim piece was cast.
The fill and bridge were then painted to match the object.
The object upon completion of treatment.
